The Moabites trace their lineage to Lot, Abraham\u2019s nephew. After the destruction of Sodom, Lot\u2019s daughters gave birth to Moab and Ammon through their father (Genesis 19:30\u201338<\/a>). This shameful origin set the tone for a people often associated with immorality and idolatry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Edomites descended from Esau, Jacob\u2019s twin brother (Genesis 25:30<\/a>; Genesis 36:1\u20139<\/a>). Esau was given the land of Seir, south of the Dead Sea. His descendants, known as Edom, became a powerful nation controlling trade routes along the King\u2019s Highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Israel journeyed from Egypt to Canaan, Moab became a stumbling block. Balak, king of Moab, hired Balaam to curse Israel (Numbers 22\u201324<\/a>). God intervened, turning curses into blessings. Yet Moab\u2019s women seduced Israel into idolatry at Peor, leading to 24,000 deaths by plague (Numbers 25<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edom\u2019s relationship with Israel was equally strained. When Israel asked to pass through Edom peacefully during the wilderness journey, Edom refused, coming out against them with a strong army (Numbers 20:14\u201321<\/a>). This set the tone for centuries of antagonism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David subdued Edom militarily (2 Samuel 8:13\u201314<\/a>), but Edom later rebelled against Judah (2 Kings 8:20\u201322<\/a>).
